Bab Al-Barqiyya

Bab al-Barqiyya is a significant gate of Cairo’s Ayyubid Wall, constructed between 1171 and 1176 (566-572 AH), which was covered by debris before its restoration.

Architecture

This gate represents a unique pattern with a bent entrance design. The foundation text bearing the name of Salah al-Din could be seen on the upper lintel of the gate.

Restoration work was carried out by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in 2008 in partnership with the Supreme Council of Antiquities. Work was completed by a contemporary design of a drawbridge installed on top of historical pillars.
